Description--
Asha Puthli Jazz Soul Vinyl- Asha Puthli’s self-titled debut from 1973 introduced an artist whose music was never easily confined to a single genre. Moving naturally between jazz, soul, funk, blues and disco influences, the album showcases the individuality and adventurous spirit that would come to define her remarkable career.
A standout on the record is Puthli’s interpretation of J.J. Cale’s “Right Down Here”. Rather than simply revisiting the original, she gives the song a character of its own, combining a deep, funky groove with her distinctive vocal style and an arrangement that feels both atmospheric and rhythmically compelling.
The album was produced in the UK by respected arranger and producer Del Newman, whose extensive career included work with artists such as Elton John, Cat Stevens and Carly Simon. His production provides a rich setting for Puthli’s voice and eclectic musical approach, helping create a record that remains difficult to categorise even decades after its original release.
Born in Mumbai, Asha Puthli went on to build a truly international and unconventional career, collaborating across musical scenes and continually exploring new sounds. Her work has subsequently found appreciation among DJs, collectors, producers and generations of listeners discovering her music for the first time.
With its combination of sophisticated arrangements, soulful performances and adventurous grooves, this debut remains a fascinating introduction to one of the more distinctive voices to emerge from the 1970s.
